There have been many claims about the causes of climate change. However, not all claims can be substantiated. For example, James E. Hansen, a scientist at NASA, has stated on numerous occasions that human activities are the chief cause behind the observed increase in Earth’s temperature. However, other scientists have disputed this. For instance, Robert Goll, a professor at Lamont College, has pointed out that there is no proof that human activities are causing the observed warming of the earth’s temperature. Similarly, James E. Kennedy, formerly a senior research scientist at the National Oceanic and Marine Science Center, has stated, “There is not one scientist who believes global warming is occurring.”

If we consider the recent record breaking temperatures experienced across the globe, it would appear that climate change is indeed occurring. With increasing frequency, certain weather patterns seem to emerge over time. What does climate mean in terms of these changes?

The rapid increase in greenhouse gas emissions since the industrial revolution, coupled with the continuing growth in human population has created a rapidly increasing rate of climate change.

Global warming is characterized by the rise in Earth’s temperature, which is commonly known as “the temperature of the earth”. Temperature change tends to be linked to the earth’s overall circulation system, which includes the greenhouse effect. The earth’s climate is affected by external factors such as the gradual increase in the level of atmospheric moisture, the land surface warming, the snow and ice melt, the variations in the earth’s orbit, the solar heating and the ocean radiations.
