Richard Lens, professor emeritus in environmental science at the University of Reading, United Kingdom; Francisco Vitoria, a researcher at the National Oceanic and Coastal Sciences Research Institute (NO CHEM) in Spain; Yonghzhi Wang, a scientist at the Beijing Institute of Oceanography; and Qingping Sun, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Science. The research combined information on past solar activity with recent data on surface temperature. It found that the number of solar storms was largely responsible for the global warming of the last century. A link was also found between increased solar activity and the rise in Earth’s temperature.
While scientists have debated the cause of the warming since the mid-20th century, the new research is the first record of an actual increase in Earth’s temperature since the start of the Industrial Revolution in the late 1800s.
